If anyone asks the best way to spend one billion dollars, we have an answer. This recent NY Times article and this one from 2018 describe the ideal destination for massive wealth. Last week, Albert Einstein College of Medicine announced that a $1 billion gift from Ruth Gottesman (who had previously taught at the school and subsequently became exceedingly affluent), would pay for all students’ tuition. Similarly, the New York University School of Medicine said a $100 million gift from Elaine and Ken Langone had jumpstarted its allocation of $650 million to the free tuition that all of its students would receive. As a result, new young physicians from both schools will graduate without hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. At the same time, their schools will surely have an uptick in applicant numbers and quality. While there is certainly no free lunch, this is close.
