Researching da Vinci and Mickey Mouse, I discovered the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain. Much more interesting than its name suggests, this Duke Center focuses on the music we listen to and the art we look at. Also looking at science and film, they consider where we share and what we own. Or, as they explained, “The public domain is the realm of material—ideas, images, sounds, discoveries, facts, texts—that is unprotected by intellectual property rights and free for all to use or build upon.”
