Just an update today. Sadly, Zai Zai lost. The giant panda cub (now 3 months old) will be called Xiao Qi Ji (little miracle). This article tells us a bit more.

I learned this week that we can help to name the Washington National Zoo’s baby panda. I voted for Zai Zai because it was my grandchild Hazel’s favorite.

My favorite podcast this week was “Squeaker.” Reported by This American Life, Squeaker conveyed a series of election stories. While all grabbed me, I especially enjoyed “Act 1” where the listener hears a very human discussion (with a happy ending) between a militia group and a Democrat who is handing out campaign literature.

As a break from an unsettled world, Outside/In from New Hampshire Public Radio is a pleasure. With the natural world their focus, their stories can range from a quirky animal tale (or tail) to snowmaking machines. This week they took me through a selective history of public land and the controversies that we are rarely aware of. As they explain, “It’s a show for anyone who has ever been outdoors.”
