Do We Have More Remote Work Babies?
October 6, 2026Having reported on last year’s giant pumpkin, we now have the 2026 update. A whopper, the Guinness record-breaker is named Bagheera and grown in the UK. Weighing 2,856.8 lbs. (1,295.8 kg), its circumference was more than 20 feet.
Meanwhile in the United States, at a Utah competition, we had a heartbreaker when the winner of a giant pumpkin contest was disqualified. The reason was the rot that dropped out of the pumpkin during the official weigh-in. A rot patch could be no bigger than 3 inches, and this one was larger. As a result, the 2,144 pound giant pumpkin named Candy Corn won. Then, with more research, I discovered a Massachusetts champ whose pumpkin weighed 2,598 pounds at the All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. At the Massachusetts competition, 5th place went to an 11-year-old with a 1,815-pound specimen.
Here, we could continue to all of the certified giant pumpkin contests that follow rules established by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC):
I asked ChatGPT to locate the certified contests in the U.S.:

Other Giant Vegetables
During the end of September, in Worcestershire, UK, seven giant vegetables smashed through previous records. At 24.6 feet, the winning cucumber was as long as a telephone pole.
These sunflower heads weigh close to 3.2 pounds.

The BBC listed the provisional winners:

Our Bottom Line: Land, Labor and Capital
Even with giant vegetables, we never move far from land, labor, and capital. The factors of production that create all goods and services, they have a herculean task with giant vegetables. Defined as natural resources, the land farmers need to grow a giant pumpkin includes 130 gallons of water daily. Labor includes six hours a day of oversight, and for many of these farmers, 50 years of accumulating their human capital. As for physical capital, equipment ranges from the heating cables needed to maintain soil temperature to forklifts for transport. Basically, they constantly monitor water (land) and fertilizer (capital) for Goldilocks amounts.
The forklift:

One of the competitors said that at 20 days, the seedling had grown to the size of a golf ball. After that though, gaining at first 27 pounds a day and then 45, you could almost see the giant pumpkin grow.
My sources and more: Hearing on the BBC’s World Business Report that it was again giant pumpkin season, we investigated. Finding the up-to-date facts here, here, and here, we identified the new record-setters while we also returned to The Washington Post for more about the factors of production. And finally, I also recommend returning to our sad story of Dug in this econlife.
