October 4, 2024Among all EV advantages, one big one is usually omitted.
Stolen Cars
In a most wanted list for car thieves, electric vehicles are at the bottom. Based on thefts per 100K insured vehicles, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are most likely to be snatched:
Correspondingly, in a list of the six least stolen vehicles, four are EVs. in addition to Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys, the GMC Acadia, Hyundai Tucson, and Volvo XC90 are the EVs or hybrids to which car thieves have a minimal affinity. Trying to figure out why, Axios tells us that the experts are not sure. But they do hypothesize that the technology could befuddle them. Furthermore, because EVs typically spend the night next to a garage when charging, their owners are nearby. In addition, their technology makes them easier to track when missing. And I would like to add that a car thief does not want to stop at a charging station during a getaway run.
Our Bottom Line: Electric Vehicle Statistics
Our World in Data tells us initially that EVs have a “carbon debt” from being manufactured. However, using them ultimately creates a lower carbon footprint than petrol or diesel cars. With many good reasons to buy an EV, their sales are up in many markets.
Norway, though, stands out for its EV commitment:
But finally, to tether our EV statistics to the real world, we should conclude with overall new car sales and what actually is on the road. Then we can see that EVs have begun to penetrate markets but their presence remains small.
New Cars Sold
In a table paired with the following graphs, Our World In Data had the precise numbers. The range was considerable with Chile at 0% for 2010 and 2023 to Norway at a whopping 85% share for 2023:
Cars on the Road
And finally, the share of cars on the road that are electric tops out at 29% in Norway but much less everywhere else:
My sources and more: Thanks to my Axios Markets newsletter for its surprising addition to my list of electric vehicle statistics. From there, Our World In Data had the overview for EV sales.
