How to Plan for a Catastrophe
November 5, 2025by Jenna C, ’26

Dear Jenna,
I am a high school student who feels pressure to join every club possible because everyone says it’ll look good for college, but now I’m overwhelmed and barely enjoy any of them. How do I decide what’s actually worth my time?
From,
An Overwhelmed Student

Dear Overwhelmed Student,
You are not alone in feeling that pressure. It can seem like everyone around you is collecting activities to fill up their college resumes. In economics, there’s a concept called diminishing returns that fits perfectly here. It means the more you add, the less each new activity adds. At first, joining new clubs helps you learn skills, make friends, and find your interests. But once your schedule is packed, every extra commitment gives you less energy, less enjoyment, and less impact.
Think of it as watering a garden. A few cups of water helps plants grow, but too much water can drown them. The same idea applies to your time and effort. When you spread your time across too many things, you lose the focus that makes your work meaningful. Diminishing returns show up everywhere, from employees losing productivity after long hours to businesses learning that more ads do not always mean more profit.
Start by asking yourself which clubs actually excite you and your time and energy actually matter. Quality matters more than quantity. Colleges value people who choose intentionally and make an impact rather than someone who tries to do it all.
Best of luck!
Jenna
