The best article I read this week was an obituary. Describing the 102-year life of William Leuchtenburg, the NY Times conveyed what it means to be an historian. While Dr. Leuchtenburg was best known for his books on Franklin Roosevelt, the presidency was really his focus. Citing Dr. Leuchtenburg’s books, the obituary demonstrates what an inspirational presidency can achieve and how legislation can help each of us. Dr. Leuchtenburg was also an advisor to Ken Burns. And now, his newest volume returned us to our first six presidents. Indeed, by looking back through a Leuchtenburg lens we can better understand the present.
