While I hesitate to recommend a book I have not completed, The Wager promises to more than realize its potential. Through the story of a catastrophic shipwreck 300 years ago, we also learn about provisioning a vessel for a yearslong journey. We see the impact of contagious disease and of scurvy. Through marvelous characterizations, we see a ship’s human capital. Through smaller facts about people and the big ones about nations, an image of a distant world emerges. The book’s reviewers tell me that indigenous people will soon add to the book’s already wonderful texture. I am delighted that I can look forward to more.
