In a recent podcast interview, Nobel (Memorial Prize) laureate Angus Deaton told us the truth about economics. Talking with Financial Times journalist Soumaya Keynes, he expressed what has gone wrong. His concern is the recent focus on optimizing GDP. Instead, we should include philosophy, ethics, sociology, history, and psychology. Then, economists would not “underweight” the big questions that would provide more perspective. Indeed, whether looking at inequality, immigration, or globalization, he said we need the bigger picture.
