How Lights Have Begun to Change Lives

During the beginning of 2025, econlife looked at Mission 300. Expecting to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030, the African Development Bank Group and the World Bank Group are the sponsors.

Now, it’s time for an update.

1. Through Mission 300, the World Bank will electrify 250 million people. Below, their map shows us where:

Meanwhile, out of 94 projects overall, 65 are active:

One example of many we could have cited, Tanzania successfully met a rural electrification June 2026 deadline that affected approximately 5 million people.

Our Bottom Line: The Human Side

Stated generally, projects range from solar hybrid grids and standalone solar systems for households to grid extension and technical assistance grants.

But we can better see the Mission 300 impact through one woman’s story. As a Tanzanian food kiosk owner, she accessed electricity several years ago. As a result, if busy, now she can close her shop at midnight rather than 6 pm. With her new refrigerators, she can preserve food, sell cold soft drinks, and increase her income. Closing late at night instead of before sundown, in newly lit village streets, she feels safer walking home. At the same time, power at home means her children can do their homework after dark. Similarly, her neighbors have established and grown businesses.
