Ever since I finished the 16 books in Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series, I’ve been looking for others that are equally good. Although not one of many (which gives me the pleasure of looking forward to the next one), The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon finally equaled the Maisie Dobbs books. Like Maisie, the protagonist, Martha Ballard was heroic. Echoing her true life as an 18th century midwife, the book was also a page turner. Its mixture of feminism, murder, and history was a compelling diversion from my everyday obligations. Although the book is not in my economics library, its is one of my e-links.
