Happily and sadly, I’ve begun to read Book #18, The Comfort of Ghosts, from Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series. I say “happily” because each of the first seventeen was a substantive page turner. Following Maisie Dobbs from her childhood through World Wars I and II, I saw her develop as a detective, as a lover, as a mother, as a friend. Separate but connected, each subplot introduced memorable people, European history, and a juicy murder. And finally, I said “sadly” because Book #18 is the last one.
