If you want to relive the pre-tech world, do take a very pleasant look at Bye Bye Birdie. The story is about a mid-western teenager being randomly selected to give “one last kiss” to Conrad Birdie on the Ed Sullivan Show. Birdie, an Elvis knockoff, is the stereotypical teenage heartthrob. Reflecting life before cell phones, the movie reminds us of what it was like to have one telephone line in a home. Unlike now, the caller had to talk with whomever answered that phone. Families were traditional with moms at home, dads at work. Stars performed on the few TV channels that existed and everyone watched Ed Sullivan on Sunday evening. And yes, Ed Sullivan was the first great “influencer.”
