With Walmart in the news today, my best podcast for this week is especially relevant. The WSJ headline said that “Walmart Warns of Slower Growth in Sales.” However, the behemoth’s resilience is particularly evident through one story of one store manager. In The Journal we heard about how one woman who started as a part-time associate, worked her way up to oversee a Walmart big-box store. Earning $6.25 an hour as a high school graduate when she was hired, now she takes home more than $200,000 annually. Furthermore, a $600,000 salary is possible. Equal to some CEOs, her responsibilities include more than 300 employees, inventory, customer satisfaction, profit margins. Indeed, she is running a large business. Hearing about the professional ascent of a single mother (with two children) that had not attended college was a pleasure.
