December 2024 Friday’s e-links: Why the Chicken Came Before the Egg

This week, I recommend a three-part podcast from Bloomberg’s Odd Lots. Called Beak Capitalism, it grabs listeners through its smaller stories and bigger message. With the chicken coming before the egg, the podcasts are all about poultry. Focusing on the chicken industry, they start with stories that include chicken sandwich wars, all of the wings we eat, and egg production. Next, having set the scene with what we consume, their second installment takes us to why we have fatter chickens. And then finally, they conclude with the industry’s big firm market structure.

Alone, we have great chicken and egg stories. Together they form a prototype for the growth of an industry that need not have been poultry.
